Black Carbon Dynamics in BASIC Nations: Re-examining EKC and Pollution Hypotheses with a Novel Structural-Break Cointegration Test

Type Peer-Reviewed Research Publication
Status ✓ Completed — Published 2026
Journal Economic Change and Restructuring

This study investigates the determinants of black carbon emissions in the BASIC nations (Brazil, China, India, and South Africa) over the period 1980–2022. It re-evaluates the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) alongside the Pollution Haven and Pollution Halo hypotheses using a novel structural-break cointegration test, offering more robust results in the presence of non-normally distributed error terms. The findings reveal pronounced heterogeneity across the BASIC countries and underscore the need for regime-sensitive, country-specific environmental policies. This is ESI’s second appearance in the international peer-reviewed literature as an institutional affiliation.
