What We Do

Our Programs

Community-centred initiatives translating climate science into lasting local action.

ESF’s programmes are designed to meet communities where they are — providing the knowledge, skills, and support needed to navigate climate change and build sustainable futures from the ground up.

All programmes are developed in close collaboration with community stakeholders and draw on evidence from ESI’s peer-reviewed research to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Programme Areas

Climate Awareness & Advocacy

ESF conducts targeted climate awareness campaigns to help communities understand the causes, consequences, and local impacts of climate change. We use accessible communication — community meetings, local radio, print materials, and digital channels — to bring the science of climate change to everyday audiences.

  • Community climate literacy workshops
  • Public advocacy campaigns on climate risks
  • Local radio and media partnerships
  • Policy advocacy at district and national levels
  • Climate storytelling and community narratives
  • Linkage to ESI’s climate research and data

Environmental Education

We work with schools, community learning centres, and informal education settings to integrate environmental literacy into learning. Our educational programmes equip learners of all ages with the knowledge and values needed to live and work in more sustainable ways.

  • School environmental clubs and eco-champions
  • Teacher training on climate and sustainability topics
  • Interactive learning materials and toolkits
  • Field learning — nature walks, farm visits, ecosystems exploration
  • Community science programmes
  • Partnerships with local educational institutions

Youth Empowerment

Young people are central to ESF’s work. We invest in youth leadership, skills development, and civic engagement — creating the next generation of environmental advocates, green entrepreneurs, and community leaders.

  • Youth leadership and environmental advocacy training
  • Green skills workshops (solar, waste management, eco-farming)
  • Youth-led community projects and seed grants
  • Mentorship linking youth to ESI researchers and professionals
  • School-to-work pathways in the green economy
  • Youth environmental networks and peer learning circles

Community Sustainability & Resilience

ESF supports communities in developing and implementing their own sustainability plans — addressing local environmental challenges such as deforestation, land degradation, water scarcity, and extreme weather events.

  • Community vulnerability and resilience assessments
  • Participatory sustainability planning
  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sustainability
  • Tree planting and reforestation initiatives
  • Disaster risk reduction and community preparedness
  • Linkage to district and national climate adaptation plans

Sustainable Livelihoods

We recognise that environmental sustainability and economic security are inseparable. ESF’s sustainable livelihoods programme supports community members — particularly women and youth — in developing income streams that are environmentally responsible and climate-resilient.

  • Climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry
  • Clean energy access and green enterprise development
  • Waste management and circular economy initiatives
  • Women’s economic empowerment in green sectors
  • Savings and enterprise support for green SMEs
  • Market linkages for eco-friendly products

Our Approach

Everything we do is guided by a set of core principles that ensure lasting impact.

🤝

Community-Led

We facilitate, not dictate. Communities shape their own programmes with ESF providing guidance, resources, and connections.

🔬

Evidence-Based

All ESF programmes are informed by scientific research, including peer-reviewed outputs from our sister organisation ESI.

🌐

Locally Relevant

We adapt international climate knowledge to local contexts, languages, and realities for maximum uptake and impact.

📊

Measurable Impact

We set clear indicators and track outcomes rigorously, ensuring accountability to communities, partners, and funders.

♀️

Gender-Responsive

Women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate change. We actively centre gender equity in all programme design.

🔗

Partnership-Driven

We work with governments, NGOs, faith institutions, schools, and the private sector to scale our reach and impact.
